FIRST EDITION. Large 8vo. 6.5 x 9.5 inches. xiii + [i] + 269 pp. Illustrated by portrait frontispiece and by 8 plates. A classic study of Harvey's achievement placed in the context of his times. The first part of the book discusses the beliefs of the movement of the heart held by Harvey's predecessors, with extracts from their works, and also those prevalent at the University of Padua when he was a student. The second part is a commentary on the evolution of Harvey's own ideas, illustrated by excerpts from his writings. The third part contains passages from the works of Jean Riolan and a consideration of how Harvey's thought developed in answer to criticism and attack. Gweneth Whitteridge (1910-83) was a medical historian and specialist on William Harvey.
