A little wear to extremities and sunned spine; otherwise a very good clean copy. 1949 gift inscription on first free endpaper. Decorated by title page vignette. The complete poetry and selected prose of the great US poet and essayist, Walt Whitman (1819-92),opening with Leaves of Grass, his famous poetry collection, first published 1855. It prints several hundred items, including prose extracts and letters. Edited by Emory Holloway (1885-1977), academic literary scholar, specialising in the work of Walt Whitman. The Nonesuch Press was a private press founded in 1922 by Francis Meynell, Vera Mendel and David Garnet. It designed its own books but had them printed commercially.
