Item Description
FIRST EDITION. 4to. 7 x 8.5 inches. xii + 210 pp. + [2] pp. publisher's advertisements. Bound in original olive green cloth, gilt, boards with blind stamped panels enclosing gilt block of county shield (repeated on spine). Deckled edges. Minor wear to extremities, fly leaves browned and some foxing largely confined to edges and margins; otherwise a very good copy. Illustrated by 24 colour plates, including frontispiece and one double page and by many other original sketches, including whole page, and maps by the author. Maxwell's highly distinctive and attractive illustrations add an extra dimension to the erudite charm of this book. He covers literary Surrey and also industrial subjects often neglected by other writers, including powder mills and iron works. Donald Maxwell (1877-1936) was an artist and book illustrator who lived in Kent and wrote several titles in the publisher's Unknown county series.
