4to. 10.75 x 7.5 inches. [ii] + 376 pp. Bound in original red cloth, gilt, spine in compartments. Spine rebacked keeping original. Extremities worn, including corners, and a little water stained and flyleaves browned; otherwise a very good copy with clean interior. 1890 gift inscription on first free endpaper. Illustrated throughout by engravings, including engraved title and title page vignette. An early French edition of the seventeenth of fifty four, Voyages extraordinaires adventure novels published 1863-1905, in the lifetime of Jules Verne (1828-1905). The first edition of Un capitaine de quinze ans whose standard English title is Dick Sand, A captain at Fifteen, was published 1878, and in English in the same year. It as a story of African slavery with other themes of whaling and entomology. The designs for the engravings of Charles Barbant were by the French caricaturist and illustrator, Henri Meyer (1841-99) and are one of his most notable Jules Verne commissions for the publishers, Hetzel
