Bound in original cloth, gilt, with contrasting title label, gilt, in pictorial dust wrapper, which has faded spine, sunned edges, some foxing and edge chips, including head and tail of spine. A little wear to tail of spine and a few traces of foxing; otherwise a very good copy.

Dorothy Osborne, Lady Temple (1627-95), from a Royalist family, fell in love in 1647 with William Temple (1628-99), later a diplomat in Brussels and The Hague. At first unable to marry, her lively courtship correspondence with him dates from 1652-54, the two years preceding their marriage. The second biographical study is of the poet Thomas Gray (1716-71). David Cecil (1902-86) was a biographer, historian and Professor of English Literature at the University of Oxford.
