Notes

An allegorical novel with a bitterly satirical attack on the colonial policy of Cecil Rhodes. This first edition includes the notorious 'hanging incident' frontispiece which was suppressed in later editions. It recounts the redemption of the racist murdering soldier, Peter Halket after seeing a vision of Christ at his campfire. Olive Schreiner (1855-1920) was an anti-war campaigner and author born in the Cape Colony.
