FIRST EDITION THUS. 8vo. 8.75 x 5.5 inches. 135 + [1] pp. Bound in pictorial green cloth, gilt, in slipcase. Spine sunned, but otherwise a very good copy. Illustrated throughout by vignettes by Ardizzone, including frontispiece. Folio Society edition, illustrated by Edward Ardizzone (1900-79), of Stevenson's early travel book, first published in 1879, which became a classic of outdoor literature. It relates his twelve day journey across the Cevennes mountains of south central France in the company of a donkey, Modestine. Stevenson pioneered the hiking and camping recreational trip, using a sleeping bag, which he commissioned.
