8vo. 7.75 x 4.75 inches. Analogy, xxx + 280; Sermons, xix+ [i] + 280 + [4] pp. publisher's advertisements. Separate title pages and pagination for Analogy and Sermons. Bound in contemporary green cloth, spine with printed paper title label. Rough cut edges. Slight wear to extremities and foxing of flyleaves, with traces on title page; otherwise a very good clean copy. 1836 inscription at head of title and initials on first free endpaper. Joseph Butler (1692-1752), theologian and philosopher, was Bishop of Bristol, 1738-50 and of Durham, 1750-52. The Analogy of Religion, first published 1736 was edited by Samuel Halifax (1733-1790), Bishop of Gloucester, 1781-89 with the preface added from 1788. Fifteen Sermons was first published 1726. The Whole Works was first published by Tegg, 1835.
