4to. 10.75 x 8 inches. xliii + [4] pp. + 208 leaves of plates + lv-lxxxiii pp. Bound in original green cloth with black title label, gilt, in pictorial dust wrapper, which has edge wear and chips and tears at head of spine. Boards have a little edge wear and sunning; A few small stains on half title; otherwise a very good copy. Illustrated by 8 colour plates and 208 black and white plates with captions opposite. Alfred Jacob Miller (1810-74) was the artist selected by Sir William Drummond Stewart for his historic expedition to the Far West in 1837. The plates reproduced include watercolours from the Walters Art Gallery, Baltimore. Edited by Marvin C. Ross, former curator of the Gallery, who has provided the account of the artist.
