Large 8vo. 8.75 x 6.75 inches. xi +[i] + 199 pp. Bound in quarter linen over plain grey boards; spine with contrasting black title label, gilt. Deckled edges. A little wear to extremities, including corners. and darkening of spine and flyleaves with a few traces of scattered foxing; otherwise a very good copy. Signed by author below limited edition statement. 1941 gift inscription on first free endpaper. A work of fiction consisting of nine humorous short stories set in China and the first work to feature the character Kai Lung, an itinerant storyteller. Ernest Bramah (1868-1942), born Ernest Brammah Smith, was a versatile writer of fiction, including detective and science fiction, whose works influenced George Orwell. This title, first published in 1900, was also reprinted as a very early Penguin book in 1936. Grant Richards (1872-1948), writer and and publisher founded the publishing house of the same name, which existed 1897-1937.
