FIRST EDITION. 8vo. 5.75 x 8.75 inches. 172 pp. Bound in original grey cloth, gilt, in price clipped pictorial dust wrapper, which has chips at head and tail of spine. Traces of foxing on fore edge,but otherwise a very good copy. 1973 inscription on front pastedown. The nineteenth published title in the author's The Sensual World autobiographical sequence. It is a description of the period, 1937-39, travelling from his London flat to Ireland, France, Switzerland, Italy and Germany. Included are his perceptive writing about the London literary scene and portraits of some of the major figures. Rupert Croft-Cooke (1903-79), born in Edenbridge, Kent, was a prolific writer both of non-fiction and of novels, publishing his detective stories under the name of Leo Bruce.
