Notes
Rare 19th century Kentish novel based on the smuggling trade in Kent and particularly on Romney Marsh and the infamous Aldington gang. A highly readable and fascinating picture of East Kent and East Sussex in the early part of the 19th century. The first edition of this rare title was published in 1845 in three volumes and is exceptionally difficult to find. This was issued as part of a cabinet edition of James's works. He was famous in his day for adventure novels. Bound in with this is another James novel 'The Forgery or best intentions'.
