8vo. 9.5 x 6.5 inches. xi + [i] + 212 pp. Bound in original brown cloth, gilt, in price clipped pictorial dust wrapper, which has sunned spine; otherwise a very good copy. Illustrated throughout by scraperboard figures, including frontispiece and by vignettes in text, including chapter headings and tailpiece. Decorated by publisher's device on title page. An anthology of the best descriptive writings on the sport of shooting. In addition to the compiler's own work, it includes extracts from such authors as Gilbert White, Richard Jefferies, W. H. Hudson, J. Wentworth and Peter Scott, and many others. Originally published in 1948, this is a reprint of the new edition of 1994. Denys James Watkins-Pitchford (1905-90), naturalist, illustrator and children's author, was born in Northants, attended the Royal College of Art and taught at Rugby School for seventeen years from 1930. He wrote under the pseudonym 'B. B.' (a reference to the size of lead shot he favoured), but used his real name as illustrator.
