Notes

This edition was first published in 1910 and first reissued with the map endpapers, designed by Edmund H. New, in 1911. The Scholar Gipsy by Matthew Arnold was first published in 1853 and Thyrsis, in book form, in 1867. Sir William Russell Flint (1880-1969) was a distinguished watercolour artist, known for his nudes and landscapes. The map endpapers show Oxford and part of the Vale of the White Horse relevant to the subject matter of the text.
