Notes

Substantially rewritten from articles that appeared in The Times in 1907.
The military career of Field Marshall Sir (Henry) Evelyn Wood (1838-1919) extended from The Crimea (where he served as a midshipman) to the Indian Mutiny during 1858-60, where he won his VC, though service in the Asante Expedition of 1873-74, the Zulu War of 1870, the First Boer War of 1881 to Egypt, 1882-85. Subsequently he held several home commands.
