Vol. I, nos. 1-53, 1750, [4] + 322 pp. + [I] pp. advertisements; Vol. II, nos. 54-105, 1750-51, [4] + 304 pp. Vol. III, nos. 106-159, 1751, [4] + 319 pp.; Vol. IV, nos. 160-208, 1751-52, [4] + 264 pp. + [32] pp. index. Bound in contemporary mottled calf; spines in compartments, decorated gilt, with contrasting title labels, gilt. Marbled edges. age related wear to extremities, with some loss to spines of Vols. I-II. otherwise a very good set in original binding. 1915 and 1929 signatures on front pastedowns with attached shelf labels, Illustrated by 4 engraved frontispiece plates, including portrait. Published anonymously twice a week, 1750-52, the moral and religious essays of The Rambler conducted by Samuel Johnson, did not become popular until they were collected together in volumes. Nine editions were published in Johnson's lifetime and thirteen had appeared by the end of the century. This 1793 set has survived complete in its original binding (ESTC N13637).
