Large 8vo. 6.5 x 9.5 inches. Vol. I, l + [ii] + 430 + [2] pp.; Vol. II, xiv + [ii] + 439 + [1] pp. Bound in original green cloth, gilt, with gilt block on front board. Deckled edges. Extremities worn, including head and tail of spine and edges browned. A few small stains and page edge tears, but otherwise a very good interior. Illustrated by 43 plates lithographed from originals, including frontispiece and engraved vignette title, by Seymour and Phiz [H. K. Browne]. (These are the later issue of plates and are as described by Smith, p. 26-27) and by 114 extra illustrated pages of plates, including facsimiles and specimen wrappers, provided by the publishers. Additionally the owner of this copy has inserted what appears to be a collection of original engraved plates for 39 of the 43 lithographed plates and pasted or tipped in one illustration and 3 cuttings at the front. A new edition of The Pickwick Papers by the original publishers, with additional material and facsimiles relating to the first serial and book form editions, and containing numerous extra illustrations. The main text is essentially similar to the first book issue in 1837 of Dickens' classic tale. The owner of this copy has loosely inserted additional engraved versions of the majority of the original plates alongside the publisher's lithographed reproductions of these. (Smith, Part I, no. 3).
