Notes
The place names of the area south and south-west of Shrewsbury, including copious field-name material. The Introduction discusses the bearing of place-name evidence of the reconstruction of early landscape and settlement patterns. Margaret Gelling (1924-2009), although educated at Oxford never held an academic position, but became an established authority on English place names, publishing a general study, Signposts to the Past and place-name volumes on Oxfordshire and Berkshire, in addition to Shropshire. She served as President of the Society, 1986-98. Gelling aimed to establish the Old English origins of Midland place-names and to link them to geographical features in the landscape.
