FIRST EDITION. Large 8vo. 9 x 6. inches. [x] + 194 + [2] pp. Bound in original red buckram, gilt, in unclipped pictorial dust wrapper, which has sunned front wrapper edges and spine with very small chips and creases at head and tail and is slightly soiled. Top edge red. A fine copy. Illustrated throughout by linocuts by William Kermode, including vignettes. Decorated by owl colophon. The first unlimited edition of Williamson's novel of the Western Front. Illustrated by the linocuts of Australian born artist, William Kermode (1895-1959), who had originally requested Williamson to provide captions for his war illustrations; instead, the author wrote a whole book around them: 'The result' however, was a most effective combination with Williamson's raw evocation of the soldier's lot perfectly complemented by the rough style and subtle humour of Kermode's images' (Matthews, p.68). A fine copy of the first unlimited edition in very good dust wrapper (Matthews, Henry Williamson A Bibliography, A13, 1930bi).
