A very good copy. 1986 presentation inscription on first free endpaper. Illustrated by 12 black and white plates, including frontispiece and by 2 maps in text, by four folding maps, including 2 at end and by genealogical tables. Decorated by publisher's series device on title page. A detailed history of the Pathans, the Pashto speaking peoples of Afghanistan and Pakistan to 1957. Olaf Kirkpatrick Caroe (1892-1981) served in India throughout the First World War and subsequently joined the Indian Political Service, being involved in the adoption of the McMahon line by India as the frontier with Tibet. He served as governor of North West Frontier Province, 1946-47. This title was first published by Macmillan in 1958 and was first issued in Pakistan in 1975, the reprint with the Epilogue on Russia (which follows after the index) appearing in 1983.
