An order, instituted in 1902, to recognise achievement in a wide variety of endeavour. It has chapters on the military men, scientists, artists, musicians and performers, writers, scholars, men of affairs, humanitarians and women, supplying a biographical sketch of each member. The book also considers those who turned down the offer (Kipling, Housman and Shaw) and those who should have received it. Appendices include the Statutes of the Order and a complete list of members.
