8vo. 7 x 4.75 inches. viii + 414 pp. Bound in brown morocco, gilt, with blind stamped borders on boards; spine in compartments with raised bands and blind stamping. Marbled boards. All edges gilt. Inner dentelles. Minor wear to extremities and light spotting of flyleaves; otherwise a fine copy. 1861 gift inscription to Isabella Monckton on second free endpaper. Decorated by publisher's device on title page. The Great Men range from St. Augustine and Alfred the Great to Lord Byron and Goethe and Richter. They include three other English kings, John Wesley, Napoleon and the poet Cowper. The first edition was published 1859. The author, Sarah Stickney Ellis (1799-1872) was a Quaker turned Congregationalist, involved in women's education and a writer on female roles in society. Among her other title were The Wives of England, The Women of England and the Daughters of England. A handsomely bound copy in fine condition.
