FIRST EDITION. 9 x 6.25 inches. xi + [i] + 204 pp. Title page in red and black. Bound in original green cloth, gilt, in unclipped pictorial dust wrapper which has a few stains and edge wear at head and tail of spine. Lower edge rough cut. Spine and board extremities sunned, flyleaves browned and occasional scattered foxing in margins; otherwise a very good copy. 1958 ownership signature on first free endpaper. Illustrated by 52 pages of black and white photographic plates and by text figures. photographs, drawings in text by author and by folding map at end. Decorated by title page wood engraved vignette by Reynolds Stone. The second stage of the author's Turkish travels, a sea journey in the 'Elfin' along the southern shores. By the famous Middle Eastern explorer and travel writer, Freya Stark (1893-1993), who extensively illustrated this work with her drawings and photographs.
