FIRST EDITION. SECOND ISSUE. 8vo. 8.5 x 5.75 inches. xiv + [ii] + 624 pp. Half title not bound in. Bound in contemporary half calf over marbled boards, spine in compartments with blind stamped bands and contrasting maroon morocco title label, gilt. Some age wear to extremities and foxing of plates; otherwise a very good copy. Illustrated by 40 engraved plates, including frontispiece and engraved vignette title. First edition possibly bound from the weekly parts as some stab holes are visible, with the plates foxed as usual. A second issue as the signpost on the vignette title has the error in the amount corrected to ?100 (Eckel, First Editions of the Writings of Charles Dickens, p. 71-73; Smith, Charles Dickens in the Original Cloth, p. 63-67).
