Item Description

FIRST EDITION. FIRST STATE with fourteen-line leaf of Dickens' errata [iv] - [xvi] + 624 pp. Half title not bound in. Bound in contemporary tan half leather over marbled boards, spine in compartments decorated gilt with gilt bands and gilt titles. All edges marbled. Marbled endpapers. Some age wear to extremities and scattered foxing with the majority of plates being clean; hence a very good copy. Coloured armourial bookplate of Samuel Briggs (probably the merchant and consul in Egypt, 1776-1868). Illustrated by 40 engraved plates, including frontispiece and engraved title. First edition, first issue; the signpost on the vignette title has not yet had the error in the amount corrected from 100? as depicted here to ?100 (Eckel, First Editions of the Writings of Charles Dickens, p. 71-73; Smith, Charles Dickens in the Original Cloth, p. 63-67). The plates are noticeably clean in this copy, compared with their usual state.
