8vo. 7.5 x 5.25 inches. vii + [i] + 368 pp. Bound in original mustard cloth with black titles and decorative border on front board. All edges red. Extremities worn, including corners and head and tail of spine, which is slightly darkened. Browning of flyleaves and title page and top edge creases on first few pages; otherwise a very good clean copy. Signature on first free endpaper. Decorated by publisher's device on title page. A comprehensive manual of medical and pharmaceutical Latin, including grammar, an essay on the reading of Latin prescriptions, medical directions and detailed Latin-English and English-Latin vocabularies. It has been described by Briony Hudson as 'the core textbook of the time' ('Step Back in Time' Day of the School of Pharmacy, Cardiff University, 2010 website) and there is a commentary on the title in The Skeptical Doctor website. Joseph Ince (1826-1907) was an Associate of King's College, London and a former Lecturer in Pharmacy to the Pharmaceutical Society of Great Britain. Editions were published from 1882 into the 1920s. Scarce early edition.
