Synopsis

Harding, s. (delin.) gardiner, w.n. (sculp.)

Item Description

Print, 8.5 x 12 inches, depicting the archetypal Kentish maid sitting on the edge of a hop bin stripping the hops from the bine. Lithographic reissue of the earlier line and stipple engraving, easily distinguished from the early issue as this version is inside an oval. Original hand-colouring.

Notes

An anonymous early nineteenth century engraving which would have been widely sold at fairs etc, and aimed at the cottager. These cheap separately published prints must have hung in every beer house and tavern, but as they were not bound in books and had low value very few have survived.
