Slight sunning of board edges and light spotting of top page edges; otherwise a very good copy. Illustrated by 19 diagrams. A brief biographical history of mathematics from Pythagoras, via Euclid, Archimedes, Descartes, Pascal and Newton to Gauss, followed by a short look at more recent developments. Herbert Westren Turnbull was Professor of Mathematics at the University of St Andrews, 1921-50. A reprint of the fourth edition of 1951; a work first published in 1929.
