Item Description

FIRST EDITION THUS. 8vo. 7.5 x 5.25 inches. x + [ii] + 166 + [2] pp. + [4] pp. publisher's advertisements. Bound in original cream cloth, gilt, with silhouette on front board, in similar dust wrapper, which has some edge loss including head and tail of spine. A little wear to extremities and spotting of spine, but otherwise a very good clean copy. Illustrated by 28 drawings and silhouettes, including frontispiece and whole page, and by endpiece vignettes, all by E. H. Shepard. The Golden Age was first published in book form in 1895 and this is the first edition with the illustrations by Ernest H. Shepard (1879-1976). Shepard was already well known for his illustrations of the books of A. A. Milne when this classic combination of author and artist first appeared in 1928. A collection of childhood reminiscences in which the children conflict with the adult Olympians of the Prologue.
