Notes
This popular translation of the works of the Jewish historian, Flavius Josephus (37 or 38-97) was reissued numerous times following its first publication in 1737. The translation of William Whiston (1667-1752) was based on that of Siwart Havercamp (1684-1742) and was revised in this edition by Thomas Smith (1775 or 6- 1830). The two volumes include The Antiquities of the Jews, The Jewish War: or, The History of the Destruction of Jerusalem and the autobiographical Life of Flavius Josephus. This edition is undated but the plates have the publication dates 1805, 1806 and 1807. Several of them are the work of George Cruickshank (1792-1878).
