Decorated by title page, head and tailpiece vignettes an by initials. A collection of three printed works, 1561, 1687 and 1703 relating to secular aspects of the French Catholic church (the Gallican Church). The Pragmatic Sanction of Bourges of 1438, a key Gallican document, agreed by Francois Premier of France and Pope Leo X, granted the French Church the right to regulate itself and limited the power of the pope within the French kingdom; the text includes that of the Concordat between pope and king. The 1687 work collects a number of declarations and decrees made in the reign of Louis XIV by the King or the Court of the Parlement of Paris concerning various rights. privileges and exemptions, etc. granted to the French clergy by the state. The 1703 title is not an official document, however, but the work of an individual, and controversial, author, which is a critical discussion of church finances first published in 1684. Richard Simon (1638-1712) was a priest, orientalist, and member of the Oratorian order, best known for his studies of Old (1678) and New (1689 onwards) Testament Biblical criticism, which were attacked and suppressed; his denial of the authorship of Moses of the Old Testament contributed to his expulsion from the Oratory in 1678. A scarce collection of works on the French church of the ancien regime.
