Extremities worn, including corners and head and tail of spine. Flyleaves browned, but otherwise a very good copy. Illustrated by 5 black and white plates mounted on brown paper, including frontispiece, by map and by text figures. Decorated by title page, chapter heading,tailpiece and endpiece vignettes. Work by the Anglo-French Catholic writer, Hilaire Belloc (1870-1953) which relates to his adopted county of Sussex. It narrates a five day pilgrimage journey of four characters, each an aspect of the author's personality, from Robertsbridge to Harting, 29 October to 2 November 1902. The text includes many songs and anecdotes. First published in 1912, the work has proved to be very influential and more recently the Sussex folk musician, Bob Copper, retraced the itinerary in the 1980s.
