FIVE VOLUMES. 12mo. 6.5 x 4.5 inches. Vol. I, 300 pp.; Vol. II, 273 pp.; Vol. III, 275 pp.; Vol. IV, 244 pp.; Vol. V, 280 pp. Bound in contemporary half leather, gilt over marbled boards. Extremities worn, including corners and spines, which have some eroded areas with loss of legibility of some titles. Scattered foxing throughout, largely confined to margins, staining to p28-29 (see photo) otherwise a very good set. A loosely structured biographical work of fiction with the author's discursive reflections on various topics, including education, women's rights and the penal laws. The religious views expressed, including a belief in universal salvation won the approval of John Wesley. The title is one of the best known works of the Irish playwright and novelist, Henry Brooke (c.1703-83), who also lived in England. First published 1765-70, it continued to be issued in later editions into the twentieth century. (Dictionary of Irish Biography online).
