Notes
This work is the best known translation by the classical scholar, Francis Howes (1776-1844), who was educated at Norwich and Cambridge, held a number of livings and was a minor canon of Norwich Cathedral from 1815.
Quintus Horatius Flaccus (65 BC-8 BC) fought on the losing side at Philippi, but was later reconciled with Augustus and settled on an estate at Tivoli. He is considered to be one of the greatest Latin poets.
