4to. 11.75 x 8.5 inches. [iv] + 44 +  pp. In paper wrapper covered by grey pictorial wrapper with Searle drawing in black and red title. A little wear at head and tail of spine and spotting of flyleaves; otherwise a very good copy. Each page of verse illustrated by pen and wash tinted Searle drawing, with endpiece vignette. A Christmas book for Sir Allen Lane, founder of Penguin Books, which he commissioned annually as gifts. This 1952 example is the popular comic verse, John Gilpin, by the poet, William Cowper (1731-1800), illustrated by the artist and satirical cartoonist, Ronald Searle (1920-2011).
