The Celts were one of the founders of European civilisation, the first North European people to emerge into recorded history. They have survived today only on the western seaboard of Europe: the Irish, Manx, Scots, Welsh, Cornish, and Bretons. The most extensive literary remains survive in Irish and Welsh, the earliest survivals from the sixth century. From Celtic legends have come the stories of Arthur and Tristan and Iseult. Peter Berresford Ellis (b.1943) a prolific author, specialising in Celtic studies (including A Dictionary of Irish Mythology, 1987), is also a writer of biographies and of popular fiction.
