The history, mechanism and manipulation of the crossbow, medieval,modern, military, sporting. Facsimile reprint of The Crossbow, the standard work for which Sir Ralph Payne-Gallwey, 3rd Baronet (1848-1916) is now best remembered. The author, who wrote principally on sporting subjects, including wildfowl and duck decoys, added an appendix covering the balista and Turkish and oriental bow, which was originally separately published in 1907. The Crossbow itself was first published in 1907, with a second edition in 1958 and several different reprint editions later.
