Small 8vo. 5.25 x 3.5 inches. [8] + 197 + [1] pp. Errata. Bound in good quality calf, gilt, with gilt borders on boards, enclosing floral decorations in each corner. Page edges marbled. Inner dentelles. some loss of text on lower right hand part of p.19 due to printing error. Marbled endpapers. Extremities a little worn, including corners and head and tail of spine, whose joints are starting to crack. Scattered foxing and browning, but otherwise a very good copy. Decorated by title page border, initials and by head and tailpiece vignettes. Frontispiece portrait of king not present, A highly critical account of KIng James I of England, including the claim that he had bee termed the wisest fool in Christendom, by a former courtier. Although the work is usually attributed to Sir Anthony Weldon (1583-1648),some authorities have cast doubt upon his authorship. Weldon, born in Swanscombe, Kent, held the county for Parliament for Kent during the Civil War as Chairman of the County Committee and survived the royalist rising of 1648, which was defeated by General Fairfax at the Battle of Maidstone.
