FIRST EDITION. 4to. 10.75 x 9.5 inches. 550 pp. Bound in quarter dark blue over light blue cloth boards, gilt, with block of names of Columbia from 1754, in unclipped pictorial dust wrapper, which has edge wear, including loss at head and tail of spine, which is sunned. Illustrated throughout by captioned black and white figures with a few in colour, and including prints, photographs, maps and facsimiles. Decorated by title page and preliminary page vignettes. Coloured pictorial endpapers. Large scale historical collection of pictorial images of New York City, divided into seven sections from 1614 to 1953. Compiled by John Atlee Kouwenhoven (1909-90), academic who taught at Barnard College, 1946-75 (Biography - John Atlee Kouwenhoven. elizabetharthur.org.website). Foreword by Grayson Louis Kirk (1903-97), political scientist, who was President of Columbia from 1953 until the student disturbances of 1968.
