Item Description

FIRST EDITION. 8vo. 6 x 9 inches. 167 + [1] pp. + [3] pp. appendix with music score and cast of the first production at the Edinburgh Festival, August 1949. Bound in original green cloth, gilt, in price clipped dust wrapper with sunned spine and top edge wear. A little sunning of lower spine and front board and slight browning of front fly leaf; otherwise a very good clean copy. Partly inspired by the work of Euripides, this was the most popular of Eliot's seven plays in his lifetime, although now overtaken by Murder in the Cathedral. Starting as a satire on the English drawing room comedy, it develops into a darker exposition of the human condition and relationships, employing absurdist elements.
