8vo. 7.75 x 5.5 inches. xxx + 484 pp. + [2] pp. publisher's series lists. Main text in double columns. Bound in original green cloth, gilt. with gilt block of series on front board within blind stamped borders. Rough cut edges. A little wear to extremities and browning of flyleaves; otherwise a very good copy. 1903 signature and 1964 inscription on first free endpaper. Decorated by publisher's device on verso of half title. The Chronicles of Jean Froissart (1338?-1410?), poet and historian, born in Valenciennes, County of Hainault, which amounted to some !.5 million words in the original manuscript versions. Translated at the request of the king, by John Bourchier, 2nd Baron Berners (1467-1537), soldier and statesman, who was appointed Chancellor of the Exchequer in 1524 by Henry VIII. Abridged and edited by George Campbell Macaulay (1852-1915), classical scholar and academic, with an introduction on Lord Berners and his translation. Froissart's Chronicle relating events of the period 1327 to 1400 is a major source for the history of western Europe, including England, Scotland, France, the Low Countries and Iberia, and covers the period of the first half of the Hundred Years War.
