FIRST EDITION. 8vo. 8.75 x 5.75 inches. xii + 160 pp. Bound in original green cloth, gilt, in pictorial dust wrapper with some damp staining on spine and edges. Damp stains on both boards, but otherwise a very good clean copy. 1957 gift inscription from author on first free endpaper. Illustrated by 8 black and white photographic plates and by 80 text figures. Decorated by title page borders and vignette and by chapter heading vignettes. A competent guide to all aspects of seashore life with an Appendix of Miscellaneous Information, which includes a classified list of the common and scientific names of species of plants and animals. Henry Gwynne Vevers (1916-88) was a Scottish born marine biologist. He was a researcher at the Marine Biological Laboratory at Plymouth, 1945-55, and later curator of the Aquarium at the London Zoo, editor of the Journal of Zoology and the Zoological Record and vice-president of the Linnean Society.
