FIRST EDITION. 4to. 11 x 9 inches. xv + [i] + 239 + [1] pp. colophon. Bound in original green cloth, gilt, front boards with gilt borders enclosing decorative gilt block. A little wear to extremities, including board edges and some foxing of page edges; otherwise a very good clean copy. Loosely inset: bookmark, including Provisional Programme of Events, 1934. Illustrated by 4 colour plates,including frontispiece, by sketch maps, cartoons, portraits, drawings, photographs and facsimiles. Decorated by vignettes and initials. Lavishly illustrated TUC commemorative book to mark the Tolpuddle Martyrs centenary. The six Dorset Labourers who formed a trade union were sentenced in Dorchester to transportation overseas on the grounds that they had sworn an illegal oath.
