Printed by John Baskett.

Item Description

Folio, in fours. 10 x 14.5 inches. No pagination provided but [18] + [380] pp. Text in double columns. Bound in maroon panelled leather with gilt outer borders; spine in compartments with raised bands, decorated gilt. Inner dentelles. All edges marbled. Marbled endpapers. A little wear to extremities, including tail of spine and edges faded: otherwise a very good copy. Armourial bookplate of Viscount Birkenhead. Illustrated by engraved frontispiece, Domus Orationis, by D. Loggan. Decorated with head and tailpiece vignettes and by initials. This handsomely bound Prayer Book includes the Forms of Prayer and Thanksgiving for 5 November (Gunpowder Treason), 30 January (King Charles the Martyr), 29 May (The Kings Restauration) and the First Day of August (the accession of George I). (ESTC T81429. Griffiths, 1718, no.4, p.148). This copy was owned by F. E. Smith, later 1st Earl of Birkenhead (1872-1930), notable barrister and Conservative politician, holding high office. Its acquisition by Birkenhead may perhaps be dated to 1921-22 as he held the title Viscount (between those of Baron and Earl) only during this period.
