FIRST EDITION. 8vo. 7.5 x 5.25 inches. xiii + [iii] + 89 + [1] + [1] pp.colophon. Bound in maroon leather, gilt, with gilt blocks on front board and spine. Bevelled board edges. Top edge gilt rest rough cut. Fly leaves browned and some scattered foxing; otherwise a very good copy. Neat 1898 inscription on first free endpaper. Illustrated by 24 plates, including frontispiece. A collection of poems by Austin Dobson (1840-1921), poet and essayist, whose work was associated with the feel of the eighteenth century. Reprinted from OLd-World Idylls and At the Sign of the Lyre and illustrated by Hugh Thomson (1860-1920) Irish born founder of the 'Cranford School' of historical illustration. His well researched pen and ink drawings appeared in numerous English classic novels published from the mid-1880s. A handsomely designed and produced book printed at the Chiswick Press.
