The Album Of Dover Views.
Charles, Reynolds and Co., 72 and 73 Fore Street and 18 and 20 Fore Street Avenue, E. C.
[n.d. but c.1893]
8vo. 6.5 x 8.5 inches. Concertina type view-book of sepia glazed lithographs, extending to c.95 inches, containing 19 different images, including two fine panoramas, including Dover from the sea (which alone extends to c.35 inches) and a smaller one of Marine Parade. Printed in Germany Bound in original cloth spine over red decorated boards, blocked in gilt. Board extremities worn, otherwise a very good copy. Publisher's advertisement on rear pastedown. This type of view book originates in Germany and is an example of the curious mixture of photograph and drawing which were prolific from about 1875 to 1895 when photography finally won the day. This example must date from about 1893 as the Promenade Pier which was completed in 1893 is shown as constructed, although the album may date from before the Pier was completed as it is quite common for these albums to have 'proposed' developments shown as completed.
