FIRST US EDITION. 8vo. 6.25 x 9.25 inches. xiii + [i] + 538 pp. Bound in original orange cloth, gilt, with gilt blocks; spine with contrasting black title label, gilt, in pictorial dust wrapper with publisher's advertisements on rear and clipped on all inside corners; chipped at edges with a stain and some loss at edge of spine. Rough fore edge. A little wear to extremities, but otherwise a very good copy. 1972 signature on first free endpaper. Illustrated by 8 pages of black and white plates, including portrait frontispiece. Decorated by publisher's device on title page. First US edition of a collective biography of T. E. Lawrence with eighty accounts by. individuals from all walks of life who knew him. It also includes full lists of all the books and of the gramophone records at Clouds Hill. contributors include Lord Halifax, Leonard Woolley, Lord Allenby, Ronald Storrs, B. H. Liddell Hart, Apsley Cherry-Gerrard, Winston Churchill, Lowell Thomas, Bernard Shaw, E. M. Forster, Robert Graves and Henry Williamson. A short account is given of each contributor. Arnold Walter Lawrence (1900-91) was the youngest brother and literary executor of T. E. Lawrence. An archaeologist and classicist, he was Professor of Classical Archaeology at the University of Cambridge, 1944-51, and subsequently Professor of Archaeology at the University College of the Gold Coast.
