8vo. 9 x 5.75 inches. vii + [1] + 406 pp. Bound in original brown cloth, gilt, in price clipped pictorial dust wrapper, which has edge wear including head and tail of spine, which is slightly sunned. A little wear to extremities and some browning of edges, but otherwise a very good copy. Illustrated by colour frontispieces. Map endpapers. Decorated by publisher's device on title page. A narrative compiled from a variety of sources, with extracts from ships' logs,letters, journals and personal diaries, etc. of the fourth and fifth years of settlement in New South Wales. Dr. John Cobley (1914-89) was an Australian physician, who graduated from the University of Sydney in 1937. He served overseas in the Australian Army Medical Corps during the war and afterwards became a populariser of Australian history and a television host. His series of Sydney Cove books eventually extended to five volumes, relating the history of the settlement to 1800. (National Portrait Gallery. Australia).
