FIRST EDITION. 8vo. 9 x 6 inches. 296 pp. Bound in original cream flecked with blue, cloth, in price clipped pictorial dust wrapper, which has slight sunning at edges. A little wear to extremities and some browning of edges, but otherwise a very good copy. Illustrated by 4 colour, including frontispiece, and by 8 black and white plates. Map endpapers. A narrative compiled from a variety of sources, with extracts from ships' logs, letters, journals and personal diaries, etc. of the first year of settlement in New South Wales. Dr. John Cobley (1914-89) was an Australian physician, who graduated from the University of Sydney in 1937. He served overseas in the Australian Army Medical Corps during the war and afterwards became a populariser of Australian history and a television host. His series of Sydney Cove books eventually extended to five volumes, relating the history of the settlement to 1800. (National Portrait Gallery. Australia).
