Bound in original brown cloth, gilt, with black decorative borders and gilt blocks on front boards. Top edges deckled. A little wear to extremities, but otherwise a very good set. 1972 blue ink signatures at head of titles. Illustrated by folding facsimile as frontispiece to Vol. I. Decorated by title page vignettes. Fifteen episodes of English history, with an introduction, based on the accounts in the published Calendars of State Papers, edited by the officials of the Record Office, with which the State Paper Office had been merged. The chapters include The Youth of Henry V, The Sweating Sickness, The Invincible Armada, The Earl of Essex's Rebellion, The Gunpowder Plot, The Massacre of Amboyna, The Lancashire Witches and The Great Fire of London. Alexander Charles Ewald (1842-91) was appointed a clerk in the Public Record Office in 1861 and became Senior Clerk by 1890. He also published several other works, covering universal and British history and historical biography.
